Banneville-la-Campagne War Cemetery serves as a solemn reminder of the intense battles that took place in Normandy during the D-Day campaign of World War II. The cemetery is the final resting place for over 2,000 Commonwealth soldiers, most of whom were part of the British forces that landed in Normandy to liberate France from German occupation. The D-Day campaign, launched on 6th June 1944, was a pivotal operation that marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany. The strategic significance of the landings at Normandy cannot be overstated, as it opened a new front against the Axis powers, forcing Germany to divert resources and attention from the Eastern Front and other occupied territories.

The Full Story

Detailed narrative for on-screen reading

The early morning of 6th June 1944 saw the start of one of the most ambitious military operations in history—Operation Overlord, better known as D-Day. As dawn broke over the choppy waters of the English Channel, a vast armada of ships appeared on the horizon, carrying tens of thousands of Allied soldiers towards the French coast. Amongst them were the brave men of the British forces, tasked with landing at Sword Beach and pushing inland to seize strategic positions from the German occupiers.

The journey across the channel was fraught with peril. Sea spray lashed the landing craft as they made their way towards the heavily fortified beaches. Yet, with steely resolve, the British troops pressed on, determined to strike a blow against the tyranny that had gripped Europe for too long. As they reached the shore, they were met with a hailstorm of gunfire and artillery shells. The air was filled with the sound of explosions and the cries of men, yet amidst this chaos, the resolve of the British forces did not waver.

Leave Your Mark

At Normandy's memorials, visitors have long placed beach pebbles on graves and monuments. A small stone carried from the shore and set down in silence. No ceremony. Just the quiet act of saying: I was here. I remember.

Walking in Their Footsteps continues that tradition in digital form. When you stand within 50 metres of a historical location, you can leave a permanent digital pebble. Your name, your dedication, your presence is recorded forever at that exact spot.

Every pebble stays. They accumulate over time, one by one, placed by visitors from around the world. A location with a single pebble tells you someone has stood where you are standing. A location with three hundred tells you something more.

You do not need to be here in person to remember. Remote Dedications allow you to place a message at any location from anywhere in the world. For the families who cannot travel. For the veterans who can no longer make the journey. Your words become part of that place permanently.

Every pebble is an act of remembrance. Every pebble says the same thing: this matters, and I will not let it be forgotten.
