The Full Story

Detailed narrative for on-screen reading

In the early hours of June 6, 1944, as dawn broke over the Normandy landscape, the fate of Saint-Lô hung in the balance. This small town, with its cobbled streets and fortified defences, had earned the nickname “the capital of the hedgerows” due to its strategic location. It was a gateway to the Cotentin Peninsula, and its capture was paramount for the success of the Allied invasion. The stakes were high, and the air was thick with tension.

On that fateful day, the skies roared with the sound of Allied bombers, their payloads aimed at the German strongholds that encircled Saint-Lô. The bombing was intended to pave the way for the advancing troops, but the German defenders, well-prepared and resolute, stood ready. Among them was Major Hermann Witzig, a seasoned officer who had witnessed the horrors of previous conflicts. As the bombs fell, Witzig rallied his men, determined to hold the town at all costs.
