Batterie du Mont Canisy, perched high above the picturesque Baie de Seine, carries with it a haunting legacy from the tumultuous days of World War II. As you stand at this formidable fortification, you can almost hear the echoes of history reverberating across the coastal winds. Built by the German Wehrmacht in the early 1940s, this coastal battery was designed to safeguard the approaches to Le Havre and serve as a bulwark against Allied naval forces during the critical hours of D-Day.
The construction of Batterie du Mont Canisy began in 1941, following the German occupation of France. Its strategic positioning allowed for an extensive view of the English Channel, enabling its powerful coastal guns to engage any ships attempting to support the Allied landings. With an array of concrete casemates, deep tunnels, and well-planned gun pits, the site exemplified Germany's commitment to fortifying the Atlantic Wall. This vast complex housed 38 cm guns, capable of firing shells over vast distances, which posed a significant threat to the Allied invasion fleet.
