The Full Story

Detailed narrative for on-screen reading

In the quiet village of Angoville-au-Plain, the echoes of history come alive, whispering tales of bravery and sacrifice from the tumultuous days of D-Day, June 6, 1944. Nestled strategically between the beaches of Utah and Omaha, this small hamlet held immense significance in the broader theatre of the Normandy campaign, serving as a vital conduit for advancing Allied forces. As soldiers rushed to secure positions and establish a foothold in France, the church in this village transformed from a place of worship into a sanctuary of life amidst the horrors of war.

As the dawn broke over the Normandy landscape, the air was thick with anticipation and dread. Allied forces began their relentless push inland, but not without grievous cost. The wounded soon overwhelmed any semblance of the calm that characterised this rural community. The church of Angoville-au-Plain, its stone walls steeped in history, quickly became a makeshift hospital, where medics and doctors from both British and American troops worked feverishly to save lives. The courageous acts of these men and women, often at great personal risk, highlighted a profound humanity that persisted despite the chaos of battle. Here, in this sacred space, soldiers of opposing sides found solace from their shared suffering, a poignant testament to the commonality of their plight amidst the atrocities of war.

Leave Your Mark

At Normandy's memorials, visitors have long placed beach pebbles on graves and monuments. A small stone carried from the shore and set down in silence. No ceremony. Just the quiet act of saying: I was here. I remember.

Walking in Their Footsteps continues that tradition in digital form. When you stand within 50 metres of a historical location, you can leave a permanent digital pebble. Your name, your dedication, your presence is recorded forever at that exact spot.

Every pebble stays. They accumulate over time, one by one, placed by visitors from around the world. A location with a single pebble tells you someone has stood where you are standing. A location with three hundred tells you something more.

You do not need to be here in person to remember. Remote Dedications allow you to place a message at any location from anywhere in the world. For the families who cannot travel. For the veterans who can no longer make the journey. Your words become part of that place permanently.

Every pebble is an act of remembrance. Every pebble says the same thing: this matters, and I will not let it be forgotten.
