Horsa Bridge, located over the Caen Canal near Benouville in Normandy, France, played a crucial role during the D-Day operations on 6 June 1944. As part of Operation Deadstick, British glider-borne troops of the 6th Airborne Division executed a daring assault to secure the bridge in the early hours of the invasion. The operation was a component of the wider Allied strategy to establish a foothold in Nazi-occupied Europe and was critical in preventing German reinforcements from reaching the beaches where the main landings would occur.

The Full Story

Detailed narrative for on-screen reading

In the dim, pre-dawn light of 6 June 1944, the tranquil countryside of Normandy was abruptly transformed as the sky hummed with the sound of incoming aircraft. Beneath the vast canopy of stars, a fleet of Horsa gliders descended silently towards their target—Horsa Bridge, a strategic crossing over the Caen Canal near Benouville. This was Operation Deadstick, a daring assault by the men of the 6th Airborne Division, an audacious endeavour that would mark the first pivotal step in the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe.

As the gliders touched down with a jarring thud, the British paratroopers, led by Major John Howard, sprang into action. They were met with a barrage of gunfire from the startled German defenders. Yet, the element of surprise was theirs. The meticulously planned operation had brought them within striking distance of the bridge with remarkable precision. Amidst the cacophony of combat—rifle shots cracking through the air, the metallic clatter of grenades, and the occasional bark of a command—the paratroopers surged forward with an unwavering focus on their singular objective: to secure Horsa Bridge intact.

Leave Your Mark

At Normandy's memorials, visitors have long placed beach pebbles on graves and monuments. A small stone carried from the shore and set down in silence. No ceremony. Just the quiet act of saying: I was here. I remember.

Walking in Their Footsteps continues that tradition in digital form. When you stand within 50 metres of a historical location, you can leave a permanent digital pebble. Your name, your dedication, your presence is recorded forever at that exact spot.

Every pebble stays. They accumulate over time, one by one, placed by visitors from around the world. A location with a single pebble tells you someone has stood where you are standing. A location with three hundred tells you something more.

You do not need to be here in person to remember. Remote Dedications allow you to place a message at any location from anywhere in the world. For the families who cannot travel. For the veterans who can no longer make the journey. Your words become part of that place permanently.

Every pebble is an act of remembrance. Every pebble says the same thing: this matters, and I will not let it be forgotten.
