La Délivrande War Cemetery serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of the D-Day campaign, particularly for the United Kingdom. Situated near the strategic town of Caen in Normandy, France, this cemetery is the final resting place for over 900 Commonwealth soldiers who lost their lives in the battle to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation. The D-Day landings on 6 June 1944 marked a pivotal phase in World War II, representing the largest amphibious invasion in history and a turning point in the war against Germany.

The Full Story

Detailed narrative for on-screen reading

Amidst the tranquil fields of Normandy, where the whispers of the past seem to linger in the gentle breeze, lies the La Délivrande War Cemetery. It stands as a solemn testament to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought in the D-Day campaign. In the early hours of 6 June 1944, as dawn broke over the choppy waters of the English Channel, the largest amphibious invasion in history was set into motion. The operation, codenamed Operation Overlord, aimed to breach Hitler’s Atlantic Wall and begin the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe.

The beaches of Normandy were designated into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. It was on these shores that over 150,000 Allied troops, including tens of thousands of British soldiers, would embark upon a mission fraught with peril. The British forces primarily targeted Gold and Sword beaches, with the daunting objective of moving inland towards the strategically significant town of Caen.

Leave Your Mark

At Normandy's memorials, visitors have long placed beach pebbles on graves and monuments. A small stone carried from the shore and set down in silence. No ceremony. Just the quiet act of saying: I was here. I remember.

Walking in Their Footsteps continues that tradition in digital form. When you stand within 50 metres of a historical location, you can leave a permanent digital pebble. Your name, your dedication, your presence is recorded forever at that exact spot.

Every pebble stays. They accumulate over time, one by one, placed by visitors from around the world. A location with a single pebble tells you someone has stood where you are standing. A location with three hundred tells you something more.

You do not need to be here in person to remember. Remote Dedications allow you to place a message at any location from anywhere in the world. For the families who cannot travel. For the veterans who can no longer make the journey. Your words become part of that place permanently.

Every pebble is an act of remembrance. Every pebble says the same thing: this matters, and I will not let it be forgotten.
