The Full Story

Detailed narrative for on-screen reading

As you stand on the sands of Omaha Beach, the gentle waves lap against the shore, and the serene landscape belies the tumultuous history etched into this stretch of Normandy coastline. The beach, approximately 6.5 kilometres long, is flanked by steep cliffs that rise sharply from the sea, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The villages of Vierville-sur-Mer, Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, and Colleville-sur-Mer nestle at the base of these bluffs, their quaint facades now peaceful but once central to a pivotal chapter in World War II.

On 6 June 1944, known as D-Day, Omaha Beach was the scene of one of the most intense and costly battles of the Allied invasion of Normandy. The beach was divided into ten sectors, codenamed from west to east as Charlie, Dog Green, Dog White, Dog Red, Easy Green, Easy White, Easy Red, Fox Green, Fox White, and Fox Red. The primary objective was to secure a beachhead 8 kilometres deep, linking up with the British landings at Gold Beach to the east and the American landings at Utah Beach to the west. This was essential for establishing a continuous foothold in Western Europe and advancing towards the liberation of France from German occupation.

Leave Your Mark

At Normandy's memorials, visitors have long placed beach pebbles on graves and monuments. A small stone carried from the shore and set down in silence. No ceremony. Just the quiet act of saying: I was here. I remember.

Walking in Their Footsteps continues that tradition in digital form. When you stand within 50 metres of a historical location, you can leave a permanent digital pebble. Your name, your dedication, your presence is recorded forever at that exact spot.

Every pebble stays. They accumulate over time, one by one, placed by visitors from around the world. A location with a single pebble tells you someone has stood where you are standing. A location with three hundred tells you something more.

You do not need to be here in person to remember. Remote Dedications allow you to place a message at any location from anywhere in the world. For the families who cannot travel. For the veterans who can no longer make the journey. Your words become part of that place permanently.

Every pebble is an act of remembrance. Every pebble says the same thing: this matters, and I will not let it be forgotten.
