Stand here for a moment and look north towards Caen. You are standing on the slopes of Verrières Ridge, the silent, blood-soaked witness to one of the most harrowing chapters of the Normandy campaign. In the summer of 1944, the view you see now was not one of peaceful farmland, but a killing field that defined the resolve of the Canadian soldier.

In July 1944, as part of Operation Spring, the men of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division were ordered to seize this high ground. The objective was simple on paper but murderous in practice: take the ridge to pin down German Panzer divisions and clear a path for the American breakout to the west. However, the German command had turned this landscape into a fortress. They mastered the art of the reverse-slope defence, hiding their formidable Tiger and Panther tanks just out of sight of Allied artillery and air power. When the Canadians began their ascent, they were moving across open, exposed slopes with no cover. As they reached the crest, they were met with a wall of fire. The cost was staggering; entire companies were decimated within minutes, and for many, this ridge became the final horizon of their lives.
