The World War II Museum in Quinéville, France, serves as a poignant reminder of the pivotal D-Day campaign. On June 6, 1944, the Allied forces executed Operation Overlord, the largest amphibious invasion in history, to liberate Western Europe from Nazi occupation. The strategic significance of D-Day was immense; it marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, opening a western front that forced the Germans to fight a two-front war, significantly depleting their resources and military strength.

The Full Story

Detailed narrative for on-screen reading

In the heart of Normandy, the tranquil village of Quinéville stands as a testament to the courage and sacrifice that characterised one of the most pivotal moments of the Second World War. On the 6th of June, 1944, the world witnessed the dawn of Operation Overlord, a meticulously orchestrated assault that would forever etch its name in the annals of history as D-Day. The serene beaches of Normandy, once peaceful stretches of sand, became the stage for the largest amphibious invasion ever undertaken, as the Allied forces launched a daring offensive to liberate Europe from the iron grip of Nazi tyranny.

As the first light of dawn broke through the grey skies, the horizon was filled with a formidable armada of ships. Over 156,000 troops from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations made their perilous journey across the choppy waters of the English Channel. Their mission was fraught with danger, as German fortifications loomed ominously over the beaches, bristling with artillery and machine guns. The soldiers, many of whom were mere boys in uniform, were acutely aware of the perils they faced. The air was thick with tension and the scent of the sea, as landing crafts approached the shore under a relentless barrage of enemy fire.

Leave Your Mark

At Normandy's memorials, visitors have long placed beach pebbles on graves and monuments. A small stone carried from the shore and set down in silence. No ceremony. Just the quiet act of saying: I was here. I remember.

Walking in Their Footsteps continues that tradition in digital form. When you stand within 50 metres of a historical location, you can leave a permanent digital pebble. Your name, your dedication, your presence is recorded forever at that exact spot.

Every pebble stays. They accumulate over time, one by one, placed by visitors from around the world. A location with a single pebble tells you someone has stood where you are standing. A location with three hundred tells you something more.

You do not need to be here in person to remember. Remote Dedications allow you to place a message at any location from anywhere in the world. For the families who cannot travel. For the veterans who can no longer make the journey. Your words become part of that place permanently.

Every pebble is an act of remembrance. Every pebble says the same thing: this matters, and I will not let it be forgotten.
